3 Best Gambling Movies

Most people love movies right? When you are bored and have nothing to do, watching movies is what we usually end up doing. There are so many genres to pick for movies in this century, we have horror, comedy, romance, romance-comedy, action, crime, superheroes and much more.

Gambling movies can be seen as one of the genres as well with how many movies about gambling there are and of course, they mix with other genres too like action, crime and even romantic-comedy.

These gambling movies can be suspenseful, exciting, funny- they just really catch your attention. Some of them can be pretty accurate too so you might learn some tips and tricks for gambling by watching these kinds of movies that would help you out when you are gambling or in your studies, especially if you are studying about psychology, anything related to mathematics and even crime investigation.

There are a lot of things you can take away from these movies if you pay attention to details and whatnot. So without further ado, here are some of the best gambling movies and why you should definitely watch them if you have not.

  1. Casino (1995) Directed by Martin Scorsese

We kick-off this list with Casino (1995), a very well-known gambling movie with A-List Hollywood actors such as Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, James Woods and a lot more and it was directed by a very legendary director, Martin Scorsese. We all know when we see “directed by Martin Scorsese” it is going to be good.

It is by no doubt that Casino is one of the best gambling movies to have ever been made, Scorsese even got nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globe Awards for directing Casino and the lead actress, Sharon Stone got nominated for best actress in a leading role for an academy award and won the best performance by an actress in a motion picture for drama category at the Golden Globe Awards.

The casino tells a tale of greed, deception, power, energy, and murder among two best friends: a mafia enforcer and a casino executive, battling for a gambling empire against each other, and a fast-living, fast-loving socialite. What is not to love from that? And this is another De Niro, Scorsese collaboration movie which is always a good thing because these two powerhouses always produce the best thing when they work together. Not to mention, this movie is based on real-life events and the primary characters were based on real people, which makes it even better.

So if you have not seen Casino, it is time you do so now.

  1. Rounders

Rounders (1998) directed by John Dahl, starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton. This might be a surprise to some of you because Rounders had a lot of mixed reviews and did not get as much praise as Casino did and it earned a modest box office.

However, in our opinion, it still should be on this list because even though the film was not a big hit when it was first released, it is now a cult hit. Also, Matt Damon starred in it, young Matt Damon which is even better.

The plot follows two friends who need to win on high-stakes poker to pay off a major debt quickly.

Matt Damon’s character, Mike McDermott is a young, reformed gambler and in the name of friendship, he had to return to playing high-stakes poker to help out his friend Lester Murph or ‘Worm’ to pay off a loan shark while maintaining his relationship with his girlfriend, Jo who was played by Gretchen Mol and keeping his commitment to law school. The word “rounder” refers to a person travelling from town to town seeking high-stakes card games.

  1. Uncut Gems (2019)

We end our shortlist with a recent movie that was just released back in 2019, Uncut Gems was directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, starring Adam Sandler as the lead actor and other A-List stars such as Idina Menzel, Lakeith Stanfield, Kevin Garnett and Julia Fox.

The story follows a gambling addict in Diamond District, New York City, who has to retrieve the valuable diamond he bought to pay off his debts.

Howard Ratner played by Adam Sandler makes a series of high-stakes bets which can lead to a lifetime windfall. Howard must perform a delicate high-wire act, juggling company, family and invading enemies on all sides in his relentless search for ultimate victory.

This film was so well received, it got nominated for multiple awards.
